GEOPRO Webinar Recording Now Available

Wed, 29 March, 2023

A recording is now available for the recent online event held by the GEOPRO team. The webinar, held on 28 February 2023, took on the topic of ‘A New Geothermal Flow Assurance Simulation Software,’ which was presented by FlowPhys AS, Norway founder, Per Kjellgren.

The webinar detailed a new geothermal flow assurance simulation software designed to help push geothermal forward as a reliable source of energy, leveraging results and innovations from several large EU-funded geothermal research projects to help reduce costs.

Geothermal, unlike some other renewable energy sources, is an ‘always-on’ energy resource that offers a baseload supply with lower life cycle CO2 emissions than biomass or solar.

Despite this, and the small footprints of geothermal plants, geothermal only has 0.4% of the electricity market, which is primarily due to the associated costs from high CAPEX, drilling and the geothermal brine causing corrosion, erosion and scaling.

The flow assurance software, which is under development, features key innovations and findings from a number of H2020-funded research projects.

These innovations include guidance for applying coatings to reduce erosion/corrosion/scaling (H2020 Geo-Coat), a scaling reduction system (H2020 GeoSmart), drilling operations and fluids (H2020 Geo-Drill), and an extended modelling capability of geofluids (H2020 GeoPro).
